In the previous post, we discussed the role of the hormone leptin in the body and how it is supposed to regulate the amount of food you eat. But often times our food choices throw our leptin levels out of balance, and the hormone is not able to do its job. Now let’s discuss how to break the cycle of overeating caused by leptin imbalances.

Similar to an addict, the best way to break the cycle is to limit and/or eliminate your sugar intake. As everyone who has tried this knows, it’s easier said than done. As sugar has infiltrated our society, culture, and families, the elimination of sugar is virtually impossible. In our

[LivFit] seminar we frequently send participants home for a “cleansing” of the pantry. I often hear how surprised even the healthiest of eaters are to find just how much food was laden with sugar and its processed companions, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, sucrose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, maltodextrin, and sorghum.

In our LivFit seminar we teach a programmed eating cycle that helps to reduce the signals of starvation by attempting to stabilize blood serum sugar levels. This is done by choosing foods that are blood sugar neutral or low glycemic. These foods, when taken in a manner that mimics your daily expenditure of food, help break the cycles of eating when you’re not hungry and eating past the feeling of being full.

We also teach in LivFit how helpful some supplements can be in breaking sugar addiction. The two best are L-glutamine and whey protein. L-glutamine helps to reduce the sugar cravings while whey protein can help a person to feel full and satisfied. These supplements, combined with a programmed eating regime, can give you a fighting chance to finally break the chains of sugar addiction and start to move the needle away from leptin resistance and towards a healthy lifestyle.
