Often I am asked, “What is the best way to get back into shape when I don’t have much time and I don’t want to go to the gym?”

This is not an easily answered question, but in this blog post and the next, I’m going to share three important points that, if employed, can have you feeling and moving better in the New Year.

Here’s the first:

Short and Convenient

Like most things, core and strength training require intentional energy to be consistent. If the workout takes too long or is not convenient in your daily schedule, you aren’t going to do it. So design a workout that is short and convenient. I find that about 15 minutes is plenty for a short, intense workout. (Intensity is key, as I will explain in the next post.) The notion of the hour-to-two-hour workout requirement to get into shape and to lose weight was long ago thwarted. Workouts popularized by CrossFit, Insanity, and many others have shown that incredible athleticism can be accomplished by short and intense workouts. Keep your workout to only 15 minutes, and resist the urge to increase it as you become more fit. Otherwise you will lose the convenience and end up stopping your workouts like you did last year.
