In a recent article by the infamous trainer Charles Poliquin (http://t.co/1dLyoxwO), a statement caught my eye: “Why You Should Avoid Cardio:”

This statement flies in the face of conventional wisdom that everyone should do cardio. So why would one of the most known and respected trainers of Olympic and professional athletes tell people to avoid cardio?

In a study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, researchers studied two groups of people who performed resistance weight exercises. One group was made up of everyday people who had no weight training experience, and the other group was made up of competitive cyclists. Both groups did the same exercises under the same protocols.

The group of everyday people astoundingly saw greater strength and muscle gains than the athletes.

This study and many other studies suggest that cardio diminishes muscle and strength gains.

Muscle and strength gains are goals for many athletes, and I would suggest they should be the goals of those trying to lose weight. In order to reach those goals, one has to perform resistance weight training.

Although cutting cardio is different from what we’re used to hearing, keep an eye on this blog to find out how to take this information and use it to you advantage in your athletic and/or weight-loss goals.
